FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Once our expert sales consultant has completed the home and user assessment, we will send our recommendation and quotation to your Public Sector representative for their approval. Once approved, they will ask us to arrange the manufacture of your stairlift, and we will be in touch to let you know when we will be installing it, we will also arrange any site-prep work if required.

Out of the thousands of stairlifts we install every year the number of problems we experience are minimal. However, if we are at fault, we will put it right, we carry full insurance for such eventualities.

In most cases, the feet of the stairlifts are simply screwed through the carpet or onto the stair treads with four screws per foot. The number of feet required will depend on your staircase, but typically there would be a foot every third or fourth step.

Your stairlift will have a removable key to isolate it, just remember to put it back once they have gone home.

Your Stannah stairlift is fitted with various warning sounds and will emit a beep as you start your journey to warn others around you that the lift is about to move. As it is battery powered it makes very little noise whilst in use, a noise that is equivalent to the hum of a microwave.

On average a Stannah stairlift costs around £25 in electricity per year to run, approximately 50p per week and less than a kettle. This may change and is based on average running costs and electricity prices.

If you no longer require the use of your stairlift, in the first instance please contact whoever arranged for the stairlift installation to clarify whether they will arrange removal. We may be able to remove and dispose of it in accordance with national environmental standards in our removal scheme.

As your stairlift is battery powered it will continue to work for a number of return journeys (around 8 depending on various factors) even if your home loses power.

Stannah stairlifts are designed to operate to the speed governed by the British Standard that is equivalent to a gentle walking pace. The actual speed is 0.1 metres per second. The average straight staircase would take around 41 seconds one way, whilst the average curved staircase would take 55 seconds one way.

Usually, any electrical work required is included within your quotation, so you don’t have to worry. We may need to upgrade the earthing in line with electrical regulations and in some cases when fitting a power point, we may have to lift carpet and/or floorboards.

As part of the handover procedure your engineer will explain what to do in the unlikely event of a breakdown. You will be given a contact telephone number for your local service branch who are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year(including Christmas Day!) and will be able to assist you. You will also find a label on the stairlift with these details, in case you don’t have it to hand.

Handrails may need to be removed, replaced or resited to provide suitable clearance for the safe working use of the stairlift. (We can remove the handrail the making good is limited as we do not decorate afterwards.)

If possible, it is best to replace your carpets before having your stairlift installed. However, if required, we can arrange to visit your home when you are having your new carpets fitted and remove the stairlift, reinstalling it later in the day. This is a chargeable service, so please contact us for a quotation beforehand.

Today’s Stannah stairlifts are the result of years of product development, rigorous testing and customer feedback. All stairlifts are built to and conform to the relevant safety standards. Our testing procedures put all product developments and changes through 120,000 cycles – the equivalent of 20 years.

Stannah stairlifts are installed in just a matter of hours by fitting the stairlift to the treads of the stairs rather than the wall with the minimum of fuss. Our engineers will make sure your home is left in exactly the same condition as they found it – with the exception of a lovely new stairlift of course! All in all, we do everything we can to ensure that the installation is as quick and convenient as possible.

Once your order has been received and all the site-prep and alterations are complete your Stannah stairlift will be installed with great care by our trained specialist engineers. After our engineer(s) has installed your stairlift they will  demonstrate the operation of the lift to
you, ensuring you are completely comfortable before leaving.

We appreciate that you may also be having other work completed in the property for example new bathroom, new doors, decorating etc, please make Stannah aware at your earliest convenience as this could have an impact on your installation date.
